Last month, I spent the majority of my time debugging one huge search function. This turned out the be a great lesson in the evils of side-effects. Every time I crossed off a bug on my list, another one would get re-opened or a completely new one would pop up.

I currently use python-mode (with Ipython as the shell) inside emacs and so far I’ve been satisfied.
The server-client model is interesting: you can already autocomplete in Ipython and funneling the completions back to emacs should not be that hard.
