Americans arrested taking children out of Haiti |... →
abbyjean: Haitian police have arrested 10 U.S. citizens caught trying to take 33 children out of the earthquake-stricken country in a suspected illicit adoption scheme, authorities said on Saturday. The five men and five women were in custody in the capital, Port-au-Prince after their arrests on Friday night. Authorities said the Americans had no documents to prove they had cleared the adoption...

U.S. suspends medical evacuations from Haiti |... →
abbyjean: The U.S. military said on Friday it has stopped flying Haitian earthquake victims to the United States for medical attention following concerns by some state governments about who will pay for the treatment. “At this moment in time, yes, the flights have stopped,” said Navy Captain Kevin Aandahl, a spokesman for the U.S. Transportation Command, which manages the military’s medical...

FDL Action » Only 32% Of Americans Know The Senate... →
A new Pew survey should throw cold water on the logic behind the Democrats’ desire to to get bipartisan support for anything. The survey finds that only a thirf of Americans (32%) were actually aware that no Republican senators voted for health care reform (29% thought Republicans in the Senate had voted for the bill, while 39% said they don’t know).

Tinkerer’s Sunset [dive into mark] →
And I know, I know, I know you can “jailbreak” your iPhone, (re)gain root access, and run anything that can motherfucking run. And I have no doubt that someone will figure out how to “jailbreak” the iPad, too. But I don’t want to live in a world where you have to break into your own computer before you can start tinkering. And I certainly don’t want to live in a world where tinkering with your...

abbyjean: I’m put back in the mind of the The Wire, when Slim Charles tells Avon that it really doesn’t matter that our wars are based on a lie. Once we’re fighting, we fight on that lie until the end. I would submit that a significant number of white people in this country, can not stop fighting on the lie. They can’t cop to the fact that they really have no standing to speak on Obama’s...

A smart accountant once told me that the answer to “How much money did you make?” is always, “Who wants to know?” If it’s an investor, the answer is “A lot.” If it’s a customer, the answer is “A little.” If it’s the IRS, the answer is “None.” Same thing here. The answer to “Who is a superstar...

Implementing a Rating-Based Item-to-Item... →
User personalization and profiling is key to many succesful Web sites. Consider that there is considerable free content on the Web, but comparatively few tools to help us organize or mine such content for specific purposes. One solution is to ask users to rate resources so that they can help each other find better content: we call this rating-based collaborative filtering. This paper presents a...

The iPad is Trying to Beat the Internet
llimllib: Apple wants you to write apps instead of websites. They’re saying “we have a better UI, better devices, and you can actually make money in our ecosystem”. Pricing the iPad low is absolutely essential for them, because they need this to be a commodity device. I expect a price drop in a year, just like the iPhone had. Long-term, they want to beat the internet at its own game. Scary.

abbyjean: More than anything else, what has happened in Haiti since 1990 should be understood as the progressive clarification of this basic dichotomy – democracy or the army. Unadulterated democracy might one day allow the interests of the numerical majority to prevail, and thereby challenge the privileges of the elite. In 2000, such a challenge became a genuine possibility: the overwhelming...
