“A powerful sense of place and belonging has led many peoples of African descent in Latin America to identify themselves as something other than Black. As a result, Afrolatinos in the United States follow in their ancestors’ footsteps, rejecting any connection to the African diaspora.NEGRITA focuses on women, the bearers of our culture and race. We will explore the difference between race and ethnicity. Can you be both Black and Latino? This documentary will expose the dynamics of being “Black”, the current tone of race relations between African-Americans and Hispanics in the United States and how the Latino perception of being ‘black’ affects AfroLatinas in the United States, regardless of culture and nationality. Why are Afrolatinas encouraged to “marry lighter” in order to Adelantar la Raza? Why do Latinos tend to define and favor their Spanish and Indigeneous heritage and often refuse to identify as anything but Black?”
